Sustainable Groundwater in Arid Middle Eastern Basins

1)Sustainable Groundwater Management in Arid Middle Eastern Basins – Integrated Framework

This study develops a four part framework for arid basin groundwater management: (1) integrated aquifer characterization, (2) nested monitoring linked to GRACE scale water balance, (3) probabilistic and optimization based sustainable yield and planned depletion analysis, and (4) climate resilience strategies combining demand management, MAR and unconventional supplies. It is illustrated with country level assessments for Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, UAE, Oman, Iraq, Iran, Turkey and Yemen, and benchmarked against practice in the US Southwest, Australian artesian basins, North Africa and Central Asia.
