Salinity, Contamination and Governance in Middle East Aquifers
The Middle East's aquifers are losing usability faster than they are losing water. In the starkest documented case, the United Arab Emirates, fresh groundwater fell from 238 km³ in 1969 to roughly 10 km³ by 2015 while total storage declined by less than six per cent: a volumetric account registers a minor loss, a usability account registers ninety-six per cent. Satellite gravimetry records the region's mass loss (91.3 ± 10.9 km³ of groundwater, Tigris-Euphrates-western Iran, 2003 to 2009) but is blind to the quality failure that actually terminates use. Geologic® synthesised the hydrochemical, isotopic, and remote-sensing evidence for the region's major aquifer systems into a review organising salinization into four process archetypes with distinct fingerprints and remedies.
The review condenses a multi-tracer toolbox into a cost-ordered decision matrix that any national laboratory can enter at its own capacity, and demonstrates the archetype separation on a compiled chloride-bromide cross-plot of 26 measured regional samples. Contamination overlays compound salinity: nitrate reaching 652 mg/L in the southeastern Nile Delta, and naturally occurring radium in the fossil sandstones now serving as strategic reserves. The closing contribution, not previously assembled in any regional review, is an explicit mapping from archetype to tracer suite to feasible intervention to governance instrument, benchmarked against a nine-country governance comparison.
